The faculties of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences have advanced to the finals of the University of Guyana (UG) Inter-Faculty Basketball Tournament after getting past their semi-final opponents yesterday afternoon at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Natural Sciences booked their spot in the finals, which will be contested today at the same venue, after they disposed of UG’s Staff team 50-43 in the feature semi-final game yesterday, while Social Sciences whipped the Faculty of Technology 63-40 in the day’s opening semi-final matchup. Natural Sciences, who are the two-time defending champions of the tournament, were once again led by their point guard and main scorer, Hugh Arthur, who had another 20 pointgame with a game high 20 points yesterday.
Spearheaded by the speedy point guard, Natural Sciences racked up a 19-10 lead by the end of the first half and fought off a stern attack from Staff, who outscored Natural Sciences 33-31 in the second half.
Arthur was the only player in the Natural Sciences lineup to reach double figures, while Staff’s scoring was led by Gerald Harry with 16 and Richard Braithwaite who contributed 16 points.Meanwhile, in the day’s curtain raiser Social Sciences cruised into the finals with a well rounded performance from the team as their starters and bench registered numbers on the score sheet. The main contributors from Social Sciences were John Fraser and Marvin Wray with 17 and 15 points respectively as they led their side to the comfortable win.
Social Sciences maintained the position ahead of their opponents from the first half of the game, which ended with them leading 29-18 and maintained it throughout the second half against the depleted Technology side.
Without key players such as Richard Mohandatt and Rudy James, who took the team to the finals of the competition last year, Technology failed to put up a fight against Social Sciences. Only one player managed to attain double figures for Technology and this came through their centre, Samuel Thompson, who led his team with 10 points.
