Citizens are warned to beware of an ongoing scam where persons have been using fake documents to pose as the owner of land and selling it to unsuspecting parties.
The Guyana Police Force, in a statement issued yesterday, explained that this particular group of criminals usually selects a property “owned by a person residing overseas, advertise it for sale and then use a false identity document to make the interested buyers, Real Estate Agents and Lawyers believe that he/she is the owner.”
It is in this way that several unsuspecting buyers and agents are then defrauded of their monies paid for the property. The police have had four such reports so far this year.
Members of the public who are entering into such business transactions with persons whose identity they are not absolutely sure of are advised to verify the identities and to make checks with the relevant authorities to verify ownership of the property before making any payments.
