A miner is now a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital after a tree fell on him while he was working in Masawani backdam, Port Kaituma.
Claude Clarke, 41, of 71 Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara was felling trees when one pinned him in the early morning hours of Wednesday. According to his wife, she received a call sometime around 3am from her husband. “When he call me he was [saying] ‘babes pray for me and let God send somebody fuh help me.’”
According to Clarke’s wife, he was alone when the tree fell on him and she stayed with him on the line for 20 minutes before his co-workers returned to discover him. Reception was bad, she said. Eventually, someone took the phone and told her that her husband had “serious injury” before hanging up.
According to Clarke, he had to pay a truck driver a pennyweight and a half of gold to be taken to the Port Kaituma Hospital. When he was scheduled to be airlifted to Georgetown, Clarke said he and his boss had to foot the airplane bill.
