CASTRIES, St Lucia, CMC – Windward Islands made early inroads into the Leeward Islands batting line-up on a rain-hit first day of their final round match in the Regional Four Day Championship here yesterday.
Winnings the toss and choosing to bowl first at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, the hosts reduced the Leewards to 62 for five at the close, after play started at 3:40 pm.
Early morning showers forced three inspections by umpires Goaland Greaves and Vivian Johnson before play got underway after tea, with 35 overs allocated for the day’s play.
The Leewards lost their first wicket without any runs on the board when Juari Edwards was bowled by pacer Mervin Matthew and the slide continued when left-arm seamer Kenroy Peters, who has so far taken two for 12, had Gavin Williams caught at third slip by Keddy Lesporis for eight at 19 for two.
Peters then removed opener Sherwin Peters caught by Lesporis after the right-hander drove at a delivery outside off stump.
Jahmar Hamilton hit left-arm spinner Gary Mathurin straight to Nelon Pascal at mid-on for nine at 44 before debutant Morland Le Blanc found Kenroy Peters’ safe hands on the mid-wicket boundary off Liam Sebastien to depart for 11.
