(Go Jamaica) The Government has indicated that it will be raising with Caricom the issue of the alleged mistreatment of a Jamaican woman by Barbados customs and immigration officials.
According to the foreign affairs minister, Dr Ken Baugh the matter will be raised at a Caricom Council meeting in Belize this week.
There has been much public outcry since Shanique Myrie, reported that she was poorly treated by customs and immigration officials at the Grantley Adams International Airport.
According to Myrie, on a visit to Barbados on March 14 she was subjected to two demeaning cavity searches by a female immigration officer and was detained for hours for interrogation.
She also said the immigration officer made several derogatory remarks about Jamaicans.
The Barbados government, through its Foreign Affairs Minister, Maxine McClean, has dismissed Myrie’s allegations.
According to McClean, a thorough investigation has been conducted by Barbados’ Immigration and Customs Departments which shows that the accusations are false.
In the meantime, Dr Baugh is encouraging Jamaicans who have been mistreated overseas to contact the foreign affairs ministry.
