St John’s, Antigua – Dr. Julian Hunte has been re-elected unopposed to the presidency of the WICB. Hunte will serve a third consecutive two-year term, ending March 2013.
Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron has also been re-elected unopposed to the office of Vice President. Cameron will also serve his third term in the post.
Dr. Hunte and Cameron first assumed the offices of President and Vice President in July 2007.
“We are at a critical stage in West Indies cricket in terms of the setting up the infrastructure to take us forward. As President I am committed to ensuring that the Strategic Framework which we are now refining is implemented and becomes operational during my term,” Dr. Hunte asserted.
“The realization of the Cricket Foundation – which we have begun to formulate – is also fundamentally necessary to fund the future growth and development of West Indies cricket,” Dr. Hunte added.
“We have commenced the process of the development of West Indies cricket at all levels and we must see this process through,” Dr. Hunte noted.
“Thus far, this Board has had significant progress in the realisation of the Sagicor High Performance Center, a revitalized West Indies A Team programmes, success in Women’s cricket, a widely successful Caribbean Twenty20 and expansion of the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket and launching of the Digicel Grassroots programmes which will all meld together to ensure future success and that our cricket is strong again at all levels,” Dr. Hunte observed.
Turning his attention to the West Indies senior team Dr. Hunte asserted that the WICB must hold true to the position it adopted towards building a successful West Indies senior team.
“We all share in the anguish and disappointment of the fans with the recent performance of our senior team in the Cricket World Cup. Whilst we are happy that the team made it to the quarter-finals we expected a better performance and greater fighting spirit from our players,” Dr. Hunte stated.
“However we need to be honest that we have a lot more work to do to reach the level where the senior team is consistently successful at the international level,” Dr Hunte said.
“We remain committed to our policy position adopted in October, 2010 which will guide our planning, preparation and selection,” Hunte reminded.
WICB Selection Policy
1. Select players with a clear signal that we are building a side
2. WICB expects a settled ODI team by the year 2013
3. The two year period between 2013 and 2015 is to be used as the final preparation to winning the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup
4. WICB expects a settled Twenty20 team by 2012
5. The two year period between 2012-2014 to be used as final preparation towards winning the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 Championship
“We fully expect the Selection Committee to follow these goals whilst management will do what is necessary to provide the resources to the HPC and Team Management to achieve the outlined goals,” Hunte concluded.
The AGM took place at the Rex Halcyon Hotel and followed the meeting of the Board of Directors which was held on Friday and Saturday.
