The Rotary Club of Stabroek said about 50 persons participated in a Spelling Bee it hosted on Saturday at one of its Literary Project sites in Bagotville.
The competition was divided into three categories: 7-10 years, 11-14 years and 15 years and older; where the first, second and third place winners in each category received prizes.
In the first category, Tracy Squires, Jimuell Alexander and Kimberly Henry copped the top three prizes respectively. In the 11-14 category, Abeda Alexander, Kimberly De Freitas and Trishelle August were the winners and in the last grouping Ashana Browne, Rondell Douglas and Tiffany Parris were the respective winners.
The club said the competition aimed at providing opportunities for increasing students’ vocabulary, promoting correct usage of words, assisting students in their spelling skills, building self esteem in an environment where they can learn to compete and develop character and sportsmanship. The contest also aimed at boosting public speaking skills and promotes a multi-sensory approach to acquiring language skills.
The club said too the concept of this competition came as a result of its continuous commitment to improving the reading and writing abilities of children in their younger years of learning and also in observance of literacy month in the Rotary calendar.
