Winners of the US Embassy’s ‘Guyana is Gorgeous Photography Competition’ were yesterday presented with awards for their work as the National Museum and the Embassy co-hosted an art display promoting nature photography that encourages tourism.
Marcia Girard was awarded for taking the first and second most popular photos, while Victor Sarab, who was not present, produced the third most popular photo, according to votes on Facebook. Janice Sukhraj won the prize for the fourth popular photo and Jermaine Grant walked away with awards for the fifth and sixth most popular photos. Honourable mentions went to Theleisha De Souza, Rashawna Alleyne, Amanda Richards, Vanessa Narine, Shane Brebner, Vidya Bijlall Sanichara and Orin Chase for excellent photos.
Attendees of the opening ceremony, which launched a two-week exhibition, heard remarks by Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad, who congratulated the US Embassy on a great initiative.
He said that the photo exhibition will help generate general awareness and also local interest, which he thinks definitely serves as a positive. “People should know more about Guyana so they can be able to sell Guyana to their relatives and friends overseas,” Prashad stated.
Also present was the US Charge d’ Affaires Thomas Pierce, who noted that artists have always been inspired by nature and this project serves to promote awareness in the natural beauty and splendor of Guyana. Pierce hopes to continue such projects annually.
