Following closely on the heels of a table tennis coaching clinic conducted by Ray `Copter’ Anderson in Bartica, a second clinic for students in the area, coordinated by Simona Broomes and held at the Modern Hotel will end today. The clinic stared on Thursday.
Last week, residents of Bartica including school children exposed to a coaching clinic conducted by Anderson and sponsored by the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) at the same venue. The GTTA had written schools in the Bartica community requesting their participation in the training sessions.
Some 83 students from various schools including St. John the Baptist Primary, St. Anthony’s Primary, Three Miles Secondary and 7th Avenue Secondary, participated n the first coaching session.
Following the conclusion of the training sessions, a tournament and bingo are expected to take place in the Bartica community on April 20 and 21.
According to a release from the GTTA, since February of this year the association has embarked on a series of coaching sessions in the various regions to jump start the development of the sport in schools, communities and homes. It has already completed sessions in Regions 6 and 10.
In addition 20 persons were recently trained as Level 1 coaches by US-based Guyanese, Sydney Christophe, who is an ITTF Coaching Instructor and former national champion.
Additionally, the GTTA, in conjunction with the Ministry of Sports recently donated 25 tables to 25 schools with the aim of promoting the sport.
