Hundreds of residents of East Ruimveldt and nearby communities last Wednesday benefitted from a one-day clinic held at the East Ruimveldt Life Improvement Centre.
Minister within the Ministry of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that the screening outreach was successful and that persons who were diagnosed with eye conditions will benefit from follow up treatment at the National Ophthalmology Hospital in Port Mourant.
Patients will be treated free of cost and those who need spectacles will be given same at a minimum cost through the Low Vision Centre located in the compound of the Georgetown Hospital. Speaking about the initiative, Ramsaran said that one of the most outstanding features of a developing country is the populace’s ability to access basic healthcare.
In addition to having their eyes screened, persons also took full advantage of the other services that were offered, including the testing of the cervix via Visual Inspection with Acetic acid (VIA), and hypertension and diabetes testing. The minister said of the 18 women who accessed the VIA test, four were found to have cancer cells and they were admitted to the VIA clinic for treatment.
