David Hinds examines ethnicity, power sharing in new book

Dr David Hinds has released a new book, titled “Ethno-Politics and Power Sharing in Guyana: History and Discourse.”

In a press release, Hinds said the book gives a historical account of ethnic competition and conflict between East Indian Guyanese and African Guyanese and the search for solutions. It also examines the ways used to bring about reconciliation and provides an account of the discourses that accompanied the politics both as catalyst and outcome.

Dr Hinds also said the book builds on previous studies which have not had the benefit of development since 1992, when the country changed from “an African dominated government to an Indian dominated one.” The release added, “While those studies captured the country’s ethnic politics within the context of an authoritarian political order, this one expands the period of democratisation,” the release said.

Dr Hinds teaches Caribbean and African Diaspora Studies in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University. More details of the book are available at http://www.newacademia.com
