Ten-acre ganja farm found off Linden/Soesdyke Highway

An operation by the Police in the E and F Division Linden, A Division and the Joint Services yesterday revealed a 10-acre cannabis operation.   Four persons were held and are expected to be charged.

According to the commander of the E and F Division, David Ramnarine, the Police were acting on a tip- off. The operation was conducted between midday and 19.00hrs yesterday off the Linden/Soesdyke Highway junction in the vicinity of Millie’s Hideout.

“We estimate it to be about 6,000 kilogrammes.

We found four makeshift camps and in one of the camps we found about 60 kilogrammes of dried plant.

These camps had beds, mattresses, clothing, foodstuff…signs that they were occupied on a regular basis,” the commander said.

It is estimated that there were 10,000 plants between six inches and six feet tall, the commander added.

Also found in one of the camps during a search were a quantity of spent shells and a quantity of live ammunition, cell phones and a quantity of cash.

A 4×4 pick-up was also found in the general area with registration belonging to an address in Linden and a driver’s licence was also found with a Georgetown address.

The commander said that of the four persons held one belonged to the bauxite community while two are from Georgetown and the fourth person is from the West Bank of Demerara.

“This operation represents an excellent piece of work based on the fact that we have been receiving information that drug use and cultivation are a problem in the Linden community and over a period of time several persons have supplied useful information to the Police,” Ramnarine said.
