Ramotar should distance himself from the politicking of his predecessor

Dear Editor,

I would like to congratulate the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) for finally selecting their presidential candidate to contest Election 2011. I would also like to congratulate Mr Donald Ramotar for earning the unrepressed confidence of his fellow party members who unanimously raised him to this most prestigious position in his lengthy political career.

Even though the selection process has somewhat raised questions among many Guyanese, myself included, it cannot be denied that the inevitable has transpired. Mr Ramotar has seemed to be the obvious choice to many Guyanese.  However, what is truly mysterious is the true reason behind the PPP’s arguably most distinguished candidate, Speaker of the House, Mr Ralph Ramkarran abstaining from contesting the position of presidential candidate of the party. Solving that mystery can only occur if and when Mr Ramkarran and his conscience come to an agreement that the truth about what transpired in the upper room at Freedom House with the higher mortals of the PPP can be disclosed.

As for the selection process it did what it was supposed to do: select a candidate. Of course many have argued that some form of election should have taken place among the members of the PPP in electing their presidential candidate, but that argument might have been lost in the democratic myth that follows the party.

Now that all the major parties have identified their presidential candidates, the race to the elections has officially broken. I sincerely hope that a decent election campaign is conducted where real and current issues are debated, analyzed and voted for or against. I urge Mr Ramotar in his campaign, to distance himself from the politicking of his predecessor. If that is at all possible, it would at least demonstrate that he has brought something new, different, and positive to the leadership of the PPP.

Yours faithfully,
Richard Francois
