Barbados name 41 for CARIFTA Games

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – CARIFTA gold medallist Akela Jones will spearhead a 41-member Barbados team at the 40th edition of the regional Games in Montego Bay later this month.

Jones, who won the high jump in Cayman Islands last year, will lead the side’s charge in the Under-17 category where she will also do battle in the long jump.

At the recently staged national CARIFTA trials, the 15-year-old smashed a 28-year-old record in the long jump with a leap of 6.18 metres which also bettered the CARIFTA record.

She will be partnered in the Under-17 category by Shakera Hall, who won bronze in the 100 metres hurdles last year. Sprinters Tristan Evelyn and the United States-based Lisa-Ann Barrow have also been included.

Sprint hurdlers Kenreisha Brathwaite and Sade-Mariah Greenidge will carry the fight for Barbados in the Under-20 category.

On the boys’ side, last year’s 800-metre champions Jarrad Mason and Antonio Mascoll will be looking for repeats.

Mason will compete in the Under-17 category while Mascoll will see action in the Under-20s.

Last year, Barbados captured 18 medals including three gold.

This year’s Games run from April 23-25.
