A miner was yesterday placed on $100,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for unlawful and malicious wounding.
The charge against Elando Retimiah is that on February 23, he unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm to Rohan Chand. The Alexander Village resident pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One.
Before the prosecution’s facts were read, Retimiah’s attorney defended his client by saying that Chand was found chopping his client’s cousin, and he (the defendant) intervened.
However, the police’s case, as presented by Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, is that on the day in question, Chand was standing on the corner when Retimiah approached him and words were exchanged between the two, after which he went away. The court heard that Retimiah subsequently returned and dealt Chand several chops about the body. The matter was reported, the accused arrested and charged, and Chand was hospitalised.
Pindar explained that Chand, who was discharged from the hospital two days ago, was unable to attend court.
Retimiah was then admitted to bail and the matter transferred to Court Two for April 12.
