Christopher Barnwell’s lone objective at this time is to make the best of his West Indies selection for the upcoming Twenty20 International against Pakistan later this month.
The 24-year-old Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Guyana allrounder told Stabroek Sport yesterday that he will be putting in the required work that is expected at the international level. The usually hard worker said that he has been working on his conditioning, along with improving his cricket on the field.
One of a few Twenty20 specialists in Guyana, Barnwell said that when he was dropped from the Guyana team during the First Class season he felt disappointed but he thought that everything happens for a reason.
“It is always a young cricketer’s dream to play for the West Indies and I would like to make the best of this opportunity. It was not a good feeling but that is the way life goes sometimes and you just have to live with it but there is an old saying that everything happens for a reason and I think it worked out for the best now.
“I have been putting myself in shape in the gym and in the park and I have been playing club cricket to help me for this experience,” the livewire player disclosed.
Often chided for his impetuous shot selection, Barnwell said that he has been working on that, adding that he has been putting himself in the “mood to play more match-winning innings.” He admitted that over the years he has been setting up matches for Guyana but was hardly at the end to finish the task and this he hopes will change.
He also indicated that he has gotten the full support of his family and he will be dedicating this first call up to the Regional team to his uncle Andrew Lyght.
