A female University of Guyana (UG) student was on Thursday evening dragged by a car during a robbery.
She and another student were both attacked along Stone Avenue, shortly after they left a shop.
“I was on the outside and I saw a light coming and I got on the inside behind my friend,” one of the girls, 22, said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
She noted that she thought she was too far out on the road but soon realised that the driver was actually moving in the corner, on to the parapet.
She recounted that the man grabbed her friend. “I thought he grab her hand but it was her bag,” she stated. While still inside his vehicle, he took off, dragging the girl for “a couple of feet” before she managed release the bag from her shoulder.
The shaken young women managed to make their way back to the shop that they had passed earlier and called a friend.
The young lady told this newspaper that the laptop bag that was stolen only contained her friend’s purse, which contained all her identification and bank cards. The girls did not report the matter to the police. The girl who spoke to this newspaper said that she encouraged her friend to report the incident but her friend was too shaken and believed that they did not have enough information to offer the police.
She said the silhouette of the man was that of “a fat person” and he was the sole occupant of the vehicle. However, because the place was dark, she said she could not make out his number plate.
The young lady noted that she was particularly scared since she believed that the man was returning. She said she saw the lights of a car that looked similar to their attackers but it turned out to be someone else.
