Guyana became the fourth Caribbean country to benefit from Digicel Grassroots Cricket Programme that was launched at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) on Friday afternoon.
The programme will be run over a two-year period and participants will benefit from infrastructure development, a high level of training programmes while also receiving cricketing gear. On the other hand, Director of Sport, Neil Kumar stated that the programme is a timely one, adding that the intervention comes at an important juncture.
Also speaking at the launch was Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) Secretary, Anand Sanasie, who thanked Digicel for “another tremendous contribution to cricket in Guyana”. Permanent Secretary of the Education Ministry, Pulandar Kandhi, also lauded this initiative. He stated that he is happy to see so many young and enthusiastic faces that will one day make Guyana proud.
Kandhi stated that the Education Ministry will give its full support and ensure there is collaboration at all levels of the school system, while wishing the youngsters success.
Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer, Gregory Dean stated that Digicel has had a long engagement with West Indies cricket, commencing in the year 2004. He stated that the programme focuses on the foundation of the game, which will help to revive the game in Guyana and the Caribbean.
Dean also commended Scotiabank for their long and continuous involvement with the Kiddies Cricket and hoped more sponsors will come on board in the future.
