The Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) convened a Caribbean Regional Climate Change Conference in Belize from March 28 to 29, drawing wide representation from the region.
And Guyana was praised for its Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), its stewardship of its rainforest and its Mangrove Restoration Project, according to a press release from Annette Arjoon-Martins who is the chair of the Mangrove Action Committee.
The GCCA, funded by the European Union (EU), comprises a national and regional component.The GCCA is funding programmes in Guyana, Belize and Jamaica under its national programme component and is about to sign an agreement with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) to actualize the Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM) regional component, the release stated.
The conference drew wide representation from the region, inclusive of representatives from Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Cuba, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Secretariat and the CCCCC.
Apart from Guyana’s participation, the country’s involvement included chairing a session titled “From Cancun to Durban: Next steps on international climate negotiations”. This session saw a review of the current status of climate change negotiations and anticipation of the steps required to achieve a post-2012 climate regime. This session was chaired by UNFCCC Lead Negotiator for Guyana, Andrew Bishop.
