Dear Editor,
Today marks a year since my grandmother Ursilla Nelson was killed. She was a robust octogenarian. She was a dear mother, grandmother and friend whom everyone admired.
Though she was in the senescence stage of her life she was as active as a teenager; she could walk a mile and never stop to catch her breath. My grandmother was far from typical; old age had no effect on her.
The way she manoeuvred and went about her everyday life, no doubt she could have lived to become a centenarian, but unfortunately her life was cut short by an inhumane speeding bus driver who was, “trying to catch the light,” on Croal Street.
It’s really sad to see the way the judicial system works in this country. What must one do to get justice in one’s own land?
Again, we see another senior citizen killed in a gruesome accident, and still nothing comes out of it. Again it was as a consequence of a really reckless driver whom I am very familiar with. And again he gets to roam the earth freely while our loved ones lie still.
Today, I plead with those in authority to do their jobs, and investigate cases before making final rulings. And despite the reckless driver that caused my grandmother’s death being placed behind bars, this can never bring her back or heal the pain we all feel. I still hope that justice will be served in this great land of ours.
Yours faithfully,
Nabijala Nelson
