Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo sentenced an East Canje security guard to 12 months jail after he was found guilty of wounding his ex-partner.
According to the facts of the case, Charles Goodluck, 61, of Betsy Ground, was charged with attempted murder but was subsequently convicted for wounding Maureen Joseph, 57, following advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram told the New Amsterdam Court that Goodluck, who has had several brushes of similar nature with the law, had had a five-month relationship with Joseph when she terminated the relationship on the grounds that he was abusive.
On May 8, 2010, Joseph was on duty as a guard at the St Aloysius Primary School in Fort Canje, Berbice when Goodluck visited her and asked her to reconcile with him. She rebuffed his attempts to reunite with her and he exited the compound. However, at the close of her shift, as Joseph was leaving the compound, Goodluck accosted her and held onto her neck saying, “If I can’t get you, then no man can’t [get you].”
The man then pulled a knife from the waistband of his pants and stabbed Joseph in the face. Goodluck was stopped from inflicting a second wound on the victim by the lights of an approaching vehicle whose driver interceded. He then fled the scene and the motorist transported a screaming Joseph to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Goodluck was subsequently arrested and charged.
