Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Tuesday remanded to prison a man accused of breaking and entering a woman’s store and stealing items valued more than $1.5M.
The Georgetown Magistrate’s Court heard that between March 29 and 30 Linden George allegedly broke into and entered a store owned by Jasmattie Zaman and stole therein a quantity of clothing, colognes, and ladies shoes valued $1,564,500.
When the magistrate asked the man whether or not he was guilty of the break and enter and larceny, a visibly distant George said, “I don’t know anything.” The magistrate then entered a plea of not guilty.
When he was asked to state his occupation, the man said he makes fishing hooks. He then gave his address as Riverview, Ruimveldt and when the magistrate asked him how long he’d been residing there, he said “once in a year I live at Ruimveldt.” No lot number was given.
The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant has no fixed place of abode and as such he is not likely to return to court to stand trial.
During the proceedings, the man whose appearance was dishevelled repeatedly spoke and mumbled a number of sentences unrelated to the matter, most of which could not be deciphered.
The magistrate then ordered a psychiatric evaluation to be done and informed the defendant that she was remanding him.
The matter will be called again on April 28.
