The Mayor and City Council’s Constabulary has beefed up security surveillance around the Stabroek Market area following reports of persons there facilitating the sale of stolen items under the pretext of doing business.
In a press release the M&CC said it had received several complaints that some persons loiter around the market area for the sole purpose of colluding with criminals to buy stolen goods. It had, therefore, deployed ranks to the area to help reduce the incidents and to date nine persons have appeared in court on loitering charges. Five of the accused have pleaded guilty and have each been granted $10,000 bail.
The City Constabulary has also stepped up vigilance of specific areas in the city to guard against the unlawful disposal of garbage on council thoroughfares. “The municipality has observed that persons come from outside of the city with cars and other modes of transportation and use council reserves as receptacles to dispose of garbage,” the release said. The council is urging persons to desist from this practice.
