Shevin Sampson who is accused of murdering miner Shane Jacobs was on Tuesday remanded to prison when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magis-trates’ Court.
The allegation against Sampson is that on April 8 at Mahdia, he murdered Shane Jacobs.
The accused was not required to plead to the capital offence after being arraigned.
His matter was transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for April 20.
Jacobs, 30, of Lot 3 Old Road, Stewartville, West Coast Demerara jointly owned a mining concession in the Pamela Backdam, Mahdia area.
In a press release issued on Saturday police said that Jacobs was murdered at about 9.15pm on Friday at Pamela Backdam. Jacobs, according to police, was involved in an argument with another man and was stabbed to the chest. He was taken to the Mahdia Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Reports are that Jacobs was slashed about the body and stabbed to the chest by a man who reportedly accused him of “leaking information to the police.” The suspect was chased by other miners and was apprehended hours after the attack.
