For ten days, from April 24 to May 3, the town of Linden will see the hive of activity it witnesses once a year when the Linden Town Week is hosted.
The theme for this year’s event is ‘Revisiting Our Heritage As We Redefine Our Future’ and the person who came up with it will be awarded $30,000 at the launching ceremony next Sunday. The name has not been released.
The celebrations coincide with the town’s anniversary and among the wide range of activities are a Spelling B competition, educational workshops, men’s workshops with open discussions on domestic violence, parenting, alcoholism among other topics, feeding of senior citizens, distribution of backpacks to several nursery schools, the annual Hard Court party in Christianburg which features a Purple theme and an open air event, featuring a band that has been voted the Best Guyanese Band based in Brooklyn.
A new organization, Women of Mission International (WOMI), will establish a local chapter. The WOMI was founded by Linda Felix-Johnson and Ismay Griffith.
This group in collaboration with the Linden Fund will host a Psychiatric Nursing Seminar, a women’s empowerment forum – ‘Empowering Women through Education’ on April 28 and an event on April 29 which will benefit persons that are normally forgotten — the area’s homeless, mentally challenged, shut-ins, physically challenged and others. WOMI plans to begin the event with a discussion forum and invited guests will include community leaders, clergy, police personnel, social workers and hospital personnel; a medical clinic where there will be limited blood pressure and diabetic testing is also planned.
New Era Entertainment, led by the Major brothers, will host an all black party on April 30 at Constabulary Hall, an all white party on April 25 at Shanghai’s residence, a wash down party on May 2 at the sports club poolside and a birthday party May 4 at L@L club. The group is working around the clock to secure an international artiste/DJ.
