The Georgetown Public Hospital in a release yesterday said that its Occupational Safety and Health Officer has said that the type of cockroach that has plagued the Female Medical Ward is the German species, which did not originate there but was taken into the hospital.
The hospital was responding to a letter in the Kaieteur News entitled `Roaches at GPHC’.
The hospital said that a contributing factor to this problem is that food is eaten in the ward and remnants fall to the ground. “Additionally, these roaches live in the plywood in which the temporary ward is constructed and in order to completely eliminate the problem, it would require for the ward to be totally dismantled.”
The hospital said that the Safety and Health Department is aware of the problem and has been working daily to contain it. “A reputable Pest Control Service is contracted to spray the ward weekly in an effort to reduce the roach population,” it said. The hospital advis-ed that very soon its patients will be moved to a better facility and made much more comfortable.
