About 40 women who were successful at the BIT garment construction training recently paid a courtesy call on Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir.According to a press release the graduates met UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Chisa Mikami and current Officer-in-Charge of the Project Monica Sharma. They were enthusiastic in their testimonies and related the positive experiences that are already accruing to them. The women, dressed in garments they had sewn themselves, were accompanied by Carl Brian of the Linden Sewing Institute.Permanent Secretary at the ministry Trevor Thomas encouraged them to “think big” and explore ways of working together. He also spoke of success stories from the micro-credit facility the ministry is handling in partnership with the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry and he urged them to find out about it. Later, the women also visited the Denmor Garment Factory.According to a press release, the programme was executed by the Board of Industrial Training and partly funded by the UNDP’s Enhanced Public Trust Security and Inclusion Project. It trained 40 persons. An additional 12 persons benefited through the Single Parents Training Programme. The programme falls under the Project’s overall assistance to the ministry through the Youth Empowerment and Livelihood component.
