Junior 100 and 200 metres sprint champion Chavez Ageday will be fit in time for the Carifta Games in Jamaica it was disclosed yesterday.
Ageday pulled his hamstring muscle in the final of the men’s 100 metres last Sunday at the Under-23 Championships held at Eve Leary Sports Club Ground.
Ageday who is a member of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) eight-man squad to represent Guyana at the Carifta Games slated for April 23-25, had surged to the front of the race with some 40 metres left to go in the men’s 100 metres finals when he pulled up and limped across the finish line.
The injury astonished the spectators some of whom questioned the legitimacy of the injury and asked whether he will be fit in time for the Carifta games.
Stabroek Sport spoke with Ageday, shortly after the race.
“Well I felt it early and I decided to go through the race because it started to ease then I felt it again and I decided to stop before I did any severe damage to myself,” he told this newspaper.
“I should be fine for the Carifta Games. I don’t think it’s any major injury because it just felt like cramps. My only disappointment is that I couldn’t finish the race and run a really fast time because that race finished in 10.4s,” Ageday added.
Stabroek Sport in a telephone interview with Ageday’s Coach, Raymond Daw yesterday got an update on the junior champion.
“It’s just some muscle spasms he’s getting from stiffness, it’s not the first time he has experienced this but he should be fine.
“He went to the doctor today (yesterday) and it wasn’t anything major but he was given the day off from training but will resume training from tomorrow (today) and he should be ready in time for the Carifta Games,” Daw added. Meanwhile the AAG has not confirmed a departure date for the team but AAG’s President Colin Boyce yesterday told Stabroek Sport that the whole team should be able to participate at the junior event in Jamaica.
