Fourteen students from the Haslington-Victoria area on the East Coast Demerara are set to benefit from a five-year scholarship from the Rose Philadelphia Annual Scholarship Fund.
This is the first year the scholarship programme has been launched and the awardees have been selected from students who wrote the National Grade Six Assessment last year. The awardees were selected by a committee, based on their need and their academic potential. The winners will be provided with school uniforms and text books over the next five years. Two of the awardees will each be given a laptop.
One of the committee members, Keith Smith said that the scholarship fund has been set up in honour of his late mother Rose Philadelphia who grew up in Victoria. His mother, he said, was someone who made the most of all the gifts given to her. She was also very caring and would always share with those who were less fortunate. He said that family members decided they would come together and honour the memory of Philadelphia via this initiative. The foundation is also planning to establish a library in the area.
The awardees are Jermaine Moore, Telecia Gordon, Ruth Solomon, Kevaun Garnette, Letroy Abel, Rachael Brandon, Shontelle Allen, Sheaba Moses, Esan Murphy, Mazeem Somersett, Joanna Sumner, Rosanna Thomas, Salome Do Santos and Delex Skeete. The awards will be handed over at a special ceremony on May 1 at Fruits of the Cross Church in Golden Grove.
