A John Street, Lodge family yesterday counted themselves lucky after their neighbours put out a fire, suspected to electrical in origin, which partially destroyed their two-bedroom apartment.
According to reports, shortly after 4.30 pm yesterday, persons noticed smoke emanating from the apartment of Leesa Taylor and an alarm was immediately raised. A neighbour who works at the power company noted that he was passing the apartment complex when he observed two persons attempting to break the door leading to the small bottom-flat apartment in order to contain the fire.
He said that after “banging this door”, the men were able to enter the apartment and a water brigade sprung into action. He said the fire, which started in the ceiling of one of the two bedrooms, had already “melt the TV they had there” and was spreading to a bed but was quickly put out.
The man said that the wiring within the building may have been faulty, as it was laid within the concrete walls of the apartment.
When Stabroek News arrived at the scene, police and fire officials were conducting investigations into the incident.
A confused Taylor stated that no one was home at the time. Her husband who was on the road, said he received a call from a neighbour who resides in the upper flat of the apartment complex, stating that one of his bedrooms was on fire. He said that when he arrived home his neighbours already had the fire under control.
The family was high in praise of the neighbours.
