The Guyana People’s Partnership (GPP) said it has been intentionally left out of recent meetings planned for identified presidential candidates to detail their plans for the nation.
In a press release, the GPP presidential candidate Peter Ramsaroop said his party had been the first to call for town hall debates moderated by private and state-owned media and other entities after the selection of the candidates from the contesting parties.
However, with plans on stream for a meeting with the candidates scheduled for the University Guyana and a series of luncheons with the business community, Ramsaroop said the GPP had not been invited. “This is a blatant attempt to bar new plans being injected into a failed political and economic system in our country,” he said. “The political establishment has had 50 years together to put forth a plan for our nation that propels it into the modern era of economic growth and they have failed,” he added.
Ramsaroop said he is willing to participate in debates with the other candidates as he believes that the process will reveal which group has the best vision for the nation and can deliver on the plans to make Guyana prosper. The GPP said the nation wants to hear all the presidential candidates’ plans for key issues such as constitutional change, their economic platform to ensure equal opportunities for all and their plan to boost the quality of life for the nation, including ensuring universal access to high quality education and health care and how they will deliver on such plans with measurable results. The GPP also restated a call for a fixed election date every five years and “not at the whim of the ruling party.” It said the governing party has abused its flexibility in setting the date.
