A new champion to be crowned tonight

A new Mayor’s Cup knockout champion will be crowned tonight when Fruta Conquerors and Sunburst Camptown collide in the one million-dollar competition final at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.

The two teams will lock horns at 8pm in the feature match of the double header card which will also feature Alpha United and Pele contesting the third place showdown from 6pm.

Two weeks ago the coaches of the finalists, Bill Wilson and Sampson Gilbert said they did not rule out upsets against Guyana’s two top teams in the semi-finals  and duly came away victorious.

The Camptown team which is coached by Wilson, stunned Alpha United 2 – 1 while Fruta Conquerors, coached by Sampson, humbled Pele 2 – 0.

When Stabroek Sport spoke to Wilson yesterday he said that his team was pretty confident heading into the match up.

“Camptown is still in the rebuilding process. It is not the same team it was a few years back but everybody is focused and (the players) are eager to perform because we want to make a statement of we are capable of, and that is being one of the country’s top teams,” he said.

Wilson added: “though we are in the rebuilding process, we have nothing to lose because we are prepared and it is important to us to take it one game at a time.”

Their opponents Fruta Conquerors, according to coach Gilbert, are also confident heading into the match because they are confident they have the ability to perform very well against any opponent and it has been proven even in the Caribbean Championship.

“Fruta Conquerors is a team that regards itself as one of the top teams in the country and we have not proven this just after we have played but while we are playing,” he said.

He disclosed that he has been aware of the team’s inability to score goals from opportunities they have created and has since been working continuously to correct it. Added to that, the squad has been working tactically to create more plays, they have been working on individual players who have to play critical roles in their team.

“It is a young bunch and they are in the process of development. Most of our players are under the age of 20 so we have a lot of work where team cohesion and discipline is concerned. Our senior players have been good role models in the team; that is what they are there for so it is good to see that they are leading from the front.” Gilbert noted.
