Contracts were signed by Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud yesterday to have work started on 10 projects that form part of the 2011 programme in which a total of $489,916,429 is being invested.
The 10 projects are as follows:
The rehabilitation of the drainage structure at Caledonia, Wakenaam, Region Three by M. Sukhai Contracting Service ($11,978,150); Excavation of Drainage Channels at Lower Pomeroon, Region Two by Paramlall Goberdhan Contracting ($20,055,140); Construction of a drainage structure at Eastern Hog Island, Region Three by Atlas Construction Inc. ($15,751,520); Expansion of a Sluice at Grove/Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Region Four by Pioneer General Construction ($45,360,325); Construction of an embankment and structure in Palmyra, Ridge and Bush Lot, Wakenaam, Region Three, also by M. Sukhai Contracting Service ($18,192,000); Supply of Geotextile materials for the construction of the EDWC Northern Relief Channel and Associated Drainage and Irrigation canals at Hope/Dochfour, ECD, Region Four from S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies ($286,459,665); Supply of Caterpillar Hydraulic Excavator and Bulldozer Spare Parts to the NDIA from Japarts ($30,299,629); Supply of Mini Hydraulic Excavator to the NDIA from Farm Supplies Ltd. ($14,000,000); Supply of Super Long Reach Hydraulic Excavator to the NDIA also from Farm Supplies Ltd ($34,700,000); and Construction of soak away and drainage system at Canvas City/Block 22, Linden, Region Ten by Dax Contracting Service ($13,120,000).
The agriculture minister, during his address, noted that the projects had passed through the public procurement process and also went through the necessary evaluation. He also stated that almost 45% of projects being implemented are behind schedule but steps are being taken to terminate a number of those contracts. “When we look at these projects, they are all necessary, they are all urgent and we have other projects…so supply in the delivery of the implementation in these projects is very, very important,” the minister added.
