Andre Lopes upstaged Rudy Grant in the Men’s Over-35 Singles as the Macorp Tennis Open continued last Wednesday at Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel tennis courts.
According to a press release, Lopes who is also President of the Guyana Tennis Coaches Association (GTCA) handed Grant, returning from some downtime, his only defeat of the tournament, beating him in two sets 6-1, 6-3. Grant had earlier won the Men’s Over 45 Singles.
Lopes put Grant on the back foot from the start by moving the ball around and claiming easy points at the net to gain the first set 6-1 while in the second set Grant caused some problems for Lopes with his persistent game but could not get the job done, falling to Lopes 6-3 in the second set.
In the Mixed Doubles Finals Jeremy Miller and Shelly Ramdyhan won a tough battle against Ezra Sue-Ho and Shawna Gentle 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 7-5.
It was an action packed final as the teams traded breaks in the first set and were tied at 6-6, before the experience of Ramdyhan and Miller prevailed as they took the tie breaker 7-3.
Sue-Ho and Gentle then took the second set 6-3 while they raced off to an early lead in the third set with a 5-3 advantage. However, Miller and Ramdyhan showed some grit and came back to win the final 7-5.
Meanwhile Miller and Sue-Ho will clash in the Men’s Singles final tomorrow in an effort to become the first Macorp Open Men’s Singles winner.
