A mother of two is dead after her motorbike collided with a car at Bartica yesterday, plunging her family into mourning and bringing a halt to their Easter festivities.
Ayana Garraway, 28, of 114 Third Avenue was pronounced dead on arrival at the Bartica Hospital at around 12.30 pm yesterday.
The accident occurred on the corner of Ninth Street and Second Avenue. According to an eyewitness, Garraway was crossing the corner when she collided with the car, PJJ 9791.
The woman was said to be speeding at the time. According to the eyewitness, the woman was earlier seen speeding across the corner. Speeding has been a longstanding issue with residents of Bartica.
The driver of the car, Richard Ghanie, meanwhile careened off the road and crashed into a nearby resident’s yard breaking down the fence. The resident said that he was at the back of his house. He said that “me ain’t hear anything” but when he came out he saw the car merged with his fence.
Ghanie was hospitalised for minor injuries.
At Garraway’s mother, Yevonne’s home, family members were still reeling from the shock of her death. Yevonne said that she heard the sound of the collision but did not come out of her house. She stated that when she was told that it was her daughter who was involved in the accident she did not want to go to the hospital because she did not want to see her daughter in that state.
Garraway had left her home to “pick up something” her grieving sister said. The family was too overcome with grief to say much more but they noted that Garraway was a housewife and the last of four siblings.
Garraway leaves to mourn her two children, an 11-year-old and a six-year-old.
