LAWRENCE, Kansas, CMC – Veronica Campbell-Brown gained a welcomed boost of confidence, when she won a 200-metres sprint on Saturday at the Kansas Relays.
The reigning women’s Olympic champion from Jamaica clocked 22.95 seconds with a 2.0m a second tailwind to prevail over American Porscha Lucas by 11 hundredths-of-a-second.
“I’m thankful that I finished the race healthy,” said Campbell-Brown. “I wish I had run faster.
“I like competing in Kansas. Last year, I wasfaster than this, but it is always good to finish victorious and finish healthy.”
Campbell-Brown posted a meet record of 22.32 secs last year to win the same event, and is looking ahead to a competitive season, which also includes the World Championships in South Korea in September.
“It’s a long season still ahead,” she said. “I’m patient, and I’m just going to keep training hard, and I’m sure the next race will be better than this one.”
Campbell-Brown is three weeks shy of her 29th birthday, and is also thinking long-term.
She said is looking to defend her Olympic title in London next year, becoming the first woman to win three straight Olympic 200 golds.
