Alisha Fortune continued to showcase her supremacy as Guyana’s best female sprinter when she won the 100m yesterday at the Mini Athletic meet hosted by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) at the Eve Leary Sports Club Ground.
The veteran sprinter turned in a time of 11.9s to win the female 100 metres invitational race leaving the under-23 champion, Neisa Allen trailing in second position while Tiffany Carto came in third.
Fortune later returned to capture the 400 metres invitational in a time of 59.1s with Shannah Thornhill and Allen second and third with times of 59.6s and 1:05.6s respectively.
Earlier in the day, seasoned campaigner Cleveland Forde out sprinted Dennis Horatio and Cleveland Thomas in the final 200 metres of the men’s 1500 metres invitational to win by a comfortable margin with Horatio and Thomas second and third respectively. Alika Morgan mirrored Forde’s win in the female version of the 1500 metres.
Rupert Perry dominanted the men’s 100 metres invitational to win comfortably in 10.4s while Quincy Clarke 10.6s and Winston George 11.0s came in second and third respectively. George returned later in the day to win the 200 and 400 metres events to claim a sprint double at the meet.
The highly anticipated 400m clash between the inform George coming off a 47.17s win in Tobago last week and 400 metres National Champion Wayne Harlequin who won his heats earlier in 49.9s to qualify for the final saw George winning the event in 49.9s without the presence of Harlequin who missed the event due to personal matters.
There were also some novelty events such as lime and spoon, three legged race, etc, but the meet was judged as a day for talent spotting by the President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Colin Boyce.
The Senior Championships will be held on May 1 at the Camp Ayanganna Ground as the AAG’s Calendar continues.
