The Caribbean Community has pledged its unwavering support of Haiti which recently successfully concluded its second round of presidential and legislative elections.
Grenada Prime Minister and Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government of Caricom Tillman Thomas, “signalled the Community’s unstinting support to Haiti” in a congratulatory message to Haiti president-elect Michel Martelly on Thursday. According to a press release Thomas said that the successful completion of the elections signalled a “renewal of spirit and the rise of a new political generation” in that Caribbean nation.
He said the people of Haiti have demonstrated their confidence in Martelly to undertake the stewardship of their future development at this critical juncture in their history. “In so doing, in particular, they have entrusted you with the critical task of continuing the country’s efforts at reconstruction and redevelopment,” Thomas said, adding that “In this regard, the Community has taken keen note of your intentions to accelerate the reconstruction efforts and to work with those who have the best interest of Haiti at heart.”
In the light of this, Thomas said the sister nations of Caricom extend their support to Haiti for its continued development and well-being as the country embarks on a new chapter in its political life. He said too Caricom looks forward to the continued participation of Haiti in the activities of the Community as it seeks to deepen the process of regional integration and build “A Community for All”. As such, Thomas welcomed Martelly to the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community saying that he is looking forward “to the opportunity of conveying, in person, the highest esteem of your colleague Heads of Government in the near future.”
