A 26-year-old labourer of Fryish Village, Corentyne is nursing gunshot injuries to his right thigh after two gunmen opened fire around 11:45 pm as he was returning home from work.
Kevin La Fleur was first treated at the Albion Estate Dispensary and police later took him to the Port Mourant Hospital before he was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Police said in a release that a glass window of a nearby home was damaged in the process. The release said too that six men have since been taken into custody and are assisting with the investigations.
Oswald La Fleur said his son is still hospitalized but his condition is said to be improving.
According to him, his son was riding home from the backdam in the company of four other men and was aback of Chesney when the two gunmen who were standing at the corner of a shop started firing shots in their direction.
He said after his son was hit he fell on the road while the others dropped their bicycles and ran for cover. The attackers continued firing even as they walked towards a house close to the street.
After the gunfire ceased La Fleur ran to the dispensary where the estate’s security contacted the police. Oswald said one of his son’s friends as well as the police called to inform him about the shooting and that they were heading to NAH.
Meanwhile there are reports that the suspects in the shooting are said to be wanted by the Suriname authorities.
Persons told this newspaper that on Wednesday police swooped down on the home where the men were staying. Police took their female partners and a young relative of one of the women into custody and reports are that the shooting was as a result of that.
The persons pointed out that if the police had continued their search for the men during Wednesday night the incident could have been avoided.
