The body of Troy James was discovered in a trench flowing under a bridge at the head of ‘A’ Field, Sophia yesterday morning
James, who residents described as mentally ill, is believed to have drowned sometime on Wednesday.
On Wednesday morning, James, said to be in his 30s, was seen lying along Dennis Street, blocking traffic. Men from a nearby vulcanising shop managed to remove him and placed him at the side of the road. James later said he was thirsty and indicated that he was going to get something to drink from the nearby trench. He then disappeared behind the bridge and failed to return. While some feared that he might have fallen overboard, no one bothered to check the area.
At the scene, a resident said that when James’ body was fished out of the trench, he was not fully dressed. “The man pants de pull down and his shirt de raise up… it ain’t look like he went to just drink water,” the man stated.
Meanwhile, James’ niece, Natasha Walker, who was told of his death by a neighbour, stated that the man lived alone on land, located in ‘E’ Field, Sophia. The land was left to him by his mother. Walker said although it was an empty lot, the man made full use of the area. She added that her uncle was unemployed and wandered the village daily. He is survived by a teenage daughter, his niece said.
