Arch rivals Yamaha Caribs and Hornets will clash today in a virtual final of the William Blackman 15-a-side rugby competition at the National Park playfield.
Hornets will enter today’s match as favourites not only because they are leading in the points standings but also because they lead the Yamaha Caribs by virtue of winning their first round clash 17-5.
Hornets have so far won all three matches they have played while Yamaha Caribs have won two matches and lost one.
The Caribs need to win today to force the outcome of the competition to be decided either by a playoff game or series or by a tiebreak system.
For today’s clash Hornets will again rely on national players Kevin Mc Kenzie, Christopher Singh and Peabo Hamilton with support from former national captains Elwin Chase and Troy Arjune.
Yamaha Caribs will be led by current national captain Claudius Butts who will team up with national coach Theodore Henry and the experienced Walter George.
Caribs, though, will rely on young and upcoming Kevin Joseph who has scored tries in consecutive games and national Under-19 captain Vellon Adams.
Meanwhile, last Saturday’s game between the Guyana Defence Force and the Yamaha Caribs was abandoned a couple of minutes from full time with Caribs leading 15-0.
According to reports a GDF player assaulted a referee following a penalty try scored by national coach Theodore Henry.
The GRFU is reportedly awaiting reports from the referee before the issue is addressed.
Prior to the incident, the two team had played to a scoreless first half which was noticeable only for the fact that GDF’s Cordell Prince, the last man in the scrum, was given a red card and sent off for an illegal tackle which reduced the GDF team to 14 men.
Yamaha Caribs was able to exploit the man shortage efficiently in the second half with tries from Claudius Butts and Walter George before the game came to its premature end.
