Students of the Agatash Primary School in Region Seven were last Saturday gifted 100 solar lamps by a German company.
It is the fulfillment of a promise made to the students when the company, SolarWatt, visited last December, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported. The gift cost $1.4M. Company representative, Robert Spitzer told GINA that SolarWatt recognised the need for electricity in the community and the willingness of the students to learn.
GINA reported that Acting Headmistress of the Agatash Primary, Shirlene Bancroft expressed gratitude to the Germans for the donation. She noted that lights will assist the children in their academic performance since without electricity; the students would have problems with their homework. The students expressed gratitude and assured that they will put the equipment to proper use.
Spitzer said that the company has been sponsoring solar projects in Guyana for the past six years and installed the first one kilowatt of solar energy in the Rupununi.
