Surinamese MP raises New River in Parliament

Surinamese parliamentarian Carl Breeveld (DOE) recently raised the issue of Suriname’s claim to the New River area in southern Guyana, according to the newspaper De Ware Tijd.

In its edition today, DWT said that Breeveld called attention to the so-called Tigri issue in Parliament. Suriname refers to Guyana’s New River area as Tigri.

During the general political remarks about the government’s policy statement, Breeveld pointed out that successive government have tried to resolve this issue peacefully, but to no avail. The current government, however, does not want to discuss this issue with Guyana or to submit it to international arbitration, he said.

The New River area is internationally recognized as belonging to Guyana but this is disputed by Suriname. The Guyana Defence Force had expelled Surinamese soldiers from the area 44 years ago.
