The Georgetown Cricket Club (GGC) was declared winners of the Noble House Seafoods second division tournament after their match against the Guyana Defence Force ended in a draw yesterday at the Demerara Cricket Club ground.
Scores in the match GCC 184 and 195; GDF 108 and 117-6.
The low scoring match saw GCC gaining first innings points after they dismissed GDF for 108 in reply to their first innings score of 184.
With a lead of 76 runs on first innings the GCC batsmen hunted quick runs and scored 195 in their second knock. Chasing a formidable score of 217 to secu8re the outright win GDF ended on 117-6 with Marcus Walling’s 33 the top score.
Gavin Singh captured two wickets.
On Saturday, Singh and Almondo Doman contributing 47 and 43 not out respectively led the GCC’s team’s batting in the first innings.
When GDF batted Trevon France picked up five wickets to help dismiss GDF for their palty 108.
GCC was indebted to Winston Forrester’s half century when they batted a second time.
Forrester stroked three fours and two sixes in the top score of 55 while Singh chipped in with 32.
GDF’s Jeremiah Harris troubled most of the GCC’s batsmen as he picked up 7 wickets from 11.3 overs.
Immediately after the match the presentation ceremony was held with president of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), Roger Harper making a few remarks.
“I would first like to congratulate GCC, I think you guys played good cricket throughout the tournament. I think GDF was unable to come up with the brand of cricket that they needed to come up with to win against GCC.
“I would also like to thank our sponsors and we look forward for cricket to be played with the same amount of zeal and also look forward for higher standard of cricket,” the former West Indies all rounder stated.
France received a trophy for being adjudged Man of the Match for his bowling figures of 11-1-36-5 while Dennis Squires got the Most Valuable Player award for his 31 wickets and 209 runs throughout the tournament. Other awards went to Shawn Massiah for the best bowling performance of 10.2-0-33-8, Charwayne McPherson for the highest individual score of 182, Squires for the most wickets, 31 and Anthony Ifill for the most runs in the tournament with 420.
In the final Harris received an award for the best bowling performance for his 7 for 40, Forrester for the highest score in the final, 55 and Alex Ramalho for the most catches in the final with two.
