Three unrated local players could soon be rated by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) based on a report on their recent performances at the Caribbean Container Incorporated tournament which ended recently at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street.
According to a release from the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) unrated players Pierre Boucher, Alex Joseph and Haatram Parbatwill have their tournament results submitted to FIDE for an assessment.
The CCI tournament was FIDE rated and the three unrated players played against FIDE rated players Wendell Meusa (1928), Taffin Khan (1802), Shiv Nandalall (1715) and David Khan (1386) in a round robin format.
Tournament Director of the GCF, Irshad Mohamad, said the report will be submitted shortly and if successful, the new rating of the players will be posted on the FIDE website in approximately three months.
In the CCI tournament, Boucher defeated current senior national champion Taffin Khan and his father David drawing with GCF president Nandalall and Meusa.
Joseph and Parbat defeated David Khan and drew with Nandalall, respectively.
Mohamad said because the three unrated players participated in a round robin competition where more than a third of the participants were FIDE rated, it automatically enabled each of them to become eligible to acquire FIDE rankings.
According to the release, the Swiss System format of a FIDE rated tournament, requires unrated chess players to play at least nine FIDE rated players before being eligible to obtain a FIDE rating.
The GCF, the release stated, will stage another FIDE rated chess tournament later this month in observance of Guyana’s Independence anniversary.
