Prisoner Sebastian Plato, who was reportedly beaten by three other prisoners at New Amsterdam Prison last week, succumbed to his injuries yesterday.
Police reported that Plato, 21, died at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) around 6 am; an investigation is ongoing.
He was on remand for murder, and was one of three prisoners allegedly beaten in the remand centre of the prison on Wednesday last.
No further details were provided on whether the prisoners accused of attacking Plato are now in police custody and efforts to contact prison officials proved futile yesterday.
Director of Prisons Dale Erskine had issued a press release following the incident saying that Plato and another prisoner, Andy Adams were injured when they sought to represent a fellow inmate.
Adams was treated and sent back to the prison, Erskine said, while Plato, who was rendered unconscious from to an injury to the head, was transferred to the GPH for further evaluation and treatment.
It was also reported that prisoner Chris Rampersaud was said to have been injured during a fight with another inmate, Desmond Isaac, in the Male Block.
The two men reportedly had a misunderstanding over an ongoing case in which they are jointly charged. Rampersaud is also currently serving a two-year sentence for break and enter and larceny.
Prison Officer Tony Lewis was reportedly injured after he intervened in the incident.
Erkine said too that the police are investigating the incidents at the prison as criminal acts and the accused inmates are currently isolated from the general population.
