MIAMI, Florida, CMC – CONCACAF said yesterday it would make a decision on who it will back in the June 1 FIFA presidential elections after it hears a presentation from candidate Mohamed Bin Hammam next Tuesday in Trinidad and Tobago.
Bin Hammam, president of the Asian Football Confederation, will challenge the incumbent Sepp Blatter for the top post in what is expected to be closely contested poll in Zurich.
Blatter addressed the ongoing CONCACAF Congress here yesterday but president Jack Warner said they would wait on Bin Hammam before finalising their vote.
“President Blatter addressed the Congress today and none of the membership expressed any displeasure with his leadership style or policies,” said Warner, who was also confirmed for a sixth term as president of CONCACAF.
“In the interest of fair play we have arranged for Mr Bin Hamman to meet with the membership on May 10 in Port of Spain … the membership of CONCACAF will meet before the FIFA Congress in June and a final decision will be made then.”
Warner, a power FIFA vice-president, has said repeatedly that CONCACAF’s vote would be united for the upcoming elections.
The continental governing body for North America, Central America and Caribbean football, CONCACAF stands as one of FIFA’s largest blocks with 35 votes.
“The ties of this family remain unbroken, we have stood the test of turbulent times and we will continue to speak with a united voice. In June, CONCACAF will vote as a block,” said Warner.
Yesterday’s Congress was attended by high-ranking football officials including UEFA President Michel Platini and FIFA vice-president and Spanish Football Federation president, Angel Maria Villar.
