Defending national female champions Rose Hall Town Metro defeated Tucber Park by 165 runs to go one up in the 2011 Berbice Cricket Board (BCB)/Millie Lewis Memorial tournament at the Area “H” Ground last weekend.
According to a press release, the tournament, organized by the BCB and sponsored by Peter Lewis of Associated Construction Services, will be a three-match series following which the female champion of Berbice will be crowned.
Batting first after losing the toss, Rose Hall Town Metro scored an imposing 209 all out in 35.1 overs.
Jacqueline Singh and national opener Melanie Henry put on 25 for the first wicket before West Indies pacer, Subrina Munroe bowled Henry for 7. Singh and the experienced Natasha Gangoo then added 23 for the second wicket before Gangoo was bowled by West Indies female bowler, Tremayne Smartt for 15. West Indies player and national captain, Shemaine Campbelle joined Singh and took the score to 96 for 3 before Singh was run out 30. Useful contributions from Campbelle 42, Erva Giddings 16, Trishanna Cort and Tessa Park 11 enabled the home team to reach their eventual total. Bowling for Tucber, Munroe snatched 4 wickets for 38 runs from eight overs while Smartt took 2 for 40.
In reply, Tucber Park had no answer for the pace/spin bowling combination of the Rose Hall Town Metro Team as West Indies pacer Giddings bowled Condolence Richmond for 0.
They never recovered and were eventually skittled for a paltry 44 in 20.4 overs.Smartt top scored with 10 while Katana Mentore and Steffi Rodney made eight and six runs respectively.
Thirteen-year-old off-spinner Phaffiana Millington took 3 wickets for 10 runs with support from Campbelle 2 for 7 and Nikita Toney 2 for 3. The two teams will clash again tomorrow in New Amsterdam and another victory would give the Berbice Championship to the Rose Hall Town Metro Team.
