Police yesterday said that the Bachelors’ Adventure teen Yannick Willis, who was shot when he attempted to elude capture on Thursday night, was a suspect in a gunpoint robbery.
Residents had alleged that Willis’ shooting was an act of police brutality.
In a press release, police explained that around 5:20 pm, ranks of a mobile police patrol at Bachelors’ Adventure saw Willis, 19, who was wanted for questioning in relation to robbery under arms, riding a bicycle along the roadway.
On seeing the police approaching, the police said that Willis rode away. He was pursued by the police and during efforts to arrest him he was shot and injured to his left foot. “Efforts are being made to retrieve a firearm he was seen throwing into a nearby canal,” the police added.
According to the police, Willis is a suspect in an armed robbery committed on Latchmin Tapsie, of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. She was held at gunpoint by a man armed with a firearm while walking along the roadway at Mon Repos. Her assailant took away her jewellery and cell phone before escaping.
