The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) and the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) were among the latest associations to benefit from donations from the Haynes Foundation of New Jersey, United States of America.
On Wednesday, the GCF received a boost of 10 junior chess sets from president and co-founder of the non-profit organization Paul Haynes.
Haynes made the presentation to Shiv Nandalall, president of the local association at the El Dorado Inn Hotel in Georgetown. Haynes, a Guyanese who lives abroad, said in brief remarks that the game of chess plays an integral role in discipline and Mathematics, adding that he sees the donation as an opportunity to de-centralize and promote chess among young people.
Nandalall, while expressing gratitude for the boost, pledged that the chess sets would become available to young players, who happen to be the main targets of the federation.
And, the GTTA on Tuesday received two gross of Stag table tennis balls from the organization. In receiving the donation vice president of the GTTA Harold Hopkinson said that Haynes was very supportive of the sport having given a monetary donation during a recent coaching course conducted by ITTF Course Instructor Sydney Christophe. Haynes, a former national badminton player, told Stabroek Sport that the
donation, which came as a result of a request from Patrick Triumph, was aimed at helping young players perfect their craft.
General Secretary of the GTTA Godfrey Munroe said that the balls will come in handy as the GTTA is about to commence training for the upcoming Cadet championships to be held in Santo Domingo and the senior Caribbean championships which Guyana will host.
